Rosh Hashanah 2024 History. Rosh hashanah occurs on the first and second days of tishri. It is the first of the high holidays or yamim noraim (“days of awe”), celebrated ten days before yom kippur.

In hebrew, the phrase rosh hashanah literally means “head of the year” and thus the holiday is commonly known as the jewish new year. This allows any young person, aged 18 to 26, to attend rosh hashanah and yom kippur services free of charge at any reform or liberal community of their choice.
